My GF and I have decided that paying someone else's mortgage is dumb. Good thing to pay your own. Now my only problem is finding a 2+ car garage and still be able to take a $10 cab downtown.
So priority list is:
1. 2+ garage w/220 adaptability, preferably heated
2. someplace to sleep, preferably heated
Now I am in the doghouse for not caring enough of the dwelling and insisting on the garage. Foolishly I responded "all I care about is the garage, you can pick the house". This, in turn, brought up the 'quality time' variable. Arg. You would think after a number of years and garage projects that she would realize who I am.
Whiskey time.

well than go for detached if you can. My 24x33 attached is nice, have a lot of stuff but no time, even though its right out the door.
You can add heat later.

Maybe you can talk her into forgoing the house and building some living quarters in a warehouse with multiple cars

May the garage gods smile on us both.

Yes! Surprisingly she is ok with this in theory....however today makes me think all may not be as it seems. It would be nice to actually have some room to work. Only time will tell.

Running out of time to do anything is a concern of mine. I am hoping if I have the space, I will make the time. Never seems to work that way...but I got hope and a olds that needs a 455 and T400.

well once you have the garage you'll have time, but gotta find it.
I have 3 project cars and got a project bike given to me. With Kids and wife you give a lot up. But my VW rabbits are waiting for me when I can get to them, so maybe it'll be my kids first car.

No kids for me yet....so I have no excuse. Well' thats a lie. My 2 car Garage is stuffed with a full-sized olds, a 'raddo, a moto and practically three 4-runners worth of spare parts. Plus- winter.
I actually was looking for a mk1 rabbit before the house hunting. Maybe by the time my GF and I stop bickering you can have one of those rabbits rolling.

I'm planning a garage addition (sep building from the house w/ attached garage) and every detail is being second guessed by Mrs. Shoe Pilot.
It's not her garage, dammit :)

I feel your pain. I have a two car garage. one is filled with my Porsche 996, tools, etc. and the other is filled with motorcycles. and, as a result of not buying a three car garage, I cannot buy an old vintage car to restore - like a Porsche 914, or a Corvair, or Karmann Ghia... and even if I did, my girl would complain at that point that she deserves a parking spot. so you should buy a four car garage if possible...

In the same boat. However we live in Los Angeles where the square footage for a 2-stall garage alone is worth a quarter million dollars. I'm pretty sure I'm screwed.

I don't know how you jalops even function in CA. Seems like everything fun is at the very least earmarked with big $$. I am much too poor for here much less the L. and the A.

Good luck on the hunt!
My wife and I are in the process of adding a 4-car double height car, so with lifts you can get 8 cars in there. Right now we have a barely 1 car garage. The compromise was that she gets a bedroom and a bathroom, that I will be allowed to sleep in.

Pretty much. However the soon-to-be wifey and I are both involved in the creative industry, so our options to work at a certain level are pretty much NY, LA, SF, and maybe a handful of jobs at some select other cities. Given that, I think LA is probably the most jalop-friendly of those options.
Still, I do fantasize about someday just moving to the middle of nowhere and buying a huge brick warehouse to build a house, garage and workshop in.

I understand this, as I am a designer in Denver. It is one of the handful of cities in fly-over country that has a growing creative industry. I resisted the call to the coasts and have made it...albeit prolly not making as much as I could be. However, I make due and have a little bit of Jalop freedom. Also- mountain roads.

Totally, Denver is great. Minneapolis, Portland, Austin, Philly, etc. All have some great design scenes. Although we do have the mountain roads covered out here :)
